Outdoor Living

Enjoy Outdoor Living in your new "Great Room."

Today’s back yards aren’t what they used to be. One of the fastest growing trends in northwest lifestyles is to include an Outdoor Living area. What was once a place for kids to play has evolved into a living area for families, neighbors, and friends to cook, dine, relax and entertain.

Top reasons homeowners are adding outdoor living spaces:
  • Create a new place to entertain and extend the summer season
  • Escape to a tranquil, relaxation retreat without the cost of travel
  • Enjoy more time at home with family and friends
  • Spend more time outdoors
  • Extend their total living space
  • Increase the value of their home

Determining the right outdoor living environment for your home:

With so many options available for creating an outdoor living environment, knowing where to start may seem a bit overwhelming. Through PSE’s Contractor Referral Service (CRS), we can now provide you with complete assistance for the planning and installation of a special, one of a kind, outdoor living environment for your home.

Types of outdoor living products:

Outdoor living is quickly gaining popularity, for homeowners that have homes and yards of all sizes. These services provide a “one call does it all” approach to the creation of a truly unique outdoor living environment.

Important considerations:

A common component in outdoor living environments is natural gas-fired equipment (fireplaces, grills, etc.). If you are looking to install natural gas-fired equipment, here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Natural Gas is the least cost fuel for gas fired outdoor living products. Natural Gas is a reliable fuel source and the supply of fuel is delivered directly to your home, so there is no tank for you to fill and you will never run out.

Additional considerations when determining the types and size of products you will install, is to assure that correct gas meter and supply line sizing and pressures are available for use with products now or in the future. PSE’s Contractor Referral Service Contractors are available to assist you in this aspect when installing products.

  • Safety: Proper and applicable code and natural gas line and product installation standards need to be a part of any natural gas installation. The use of licensed and bonded mechanical contractors or other professionals is always very important.

Utility location is also a very important element of any outdoor project to make sure there are no underground utilities. When working on any project where digging is required, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to call the Utilities Underground Location Center (UULC) two full working days before you dig at 1-800-424-5555. For more information on this free service, visit www.callbeforeyoudig.com.

Underground fuel line is the property of the homeowner. Anytime it is installed it is vital that proper codes and standards are adhered to. Contact your local jurisdiction for the necessary standards and requirements for installation.

  • Outdoor Products: Always review your choice of outdoor products to assure that they are the most fuel-efficient available for the use you have in mind. Design for use in an outdoor environment with regards to the materials used and durability are also important factors for any outdoor equipment.

  • Installation Coordination: The installation of products and other attributes of an outdoor living environment typically require a step by step planning of installation progression. Each process needs to be planned to avoid conflict or interuption of the next steps. Planning should be implemented to avoid non-productive steps.
